“A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of” Nelson Mandela.
Team CTICC never needs much encouragement to throw their weight behind worthy projects and community causes. This year’s International Nelson Mandela Day was no different. In fact, instead of doing one activation on the day, the team had executed
various projects during July in honour of Tata Madiba. Four activations were planned around the four themes of Mandela Day – involving the centre’s four local community partners who address fundamental issues within our immediate and broader communities.
The first activation took place on Friday, 3 July 2015, at The Haven Night Shelter, which related to the Mandela Day theme of Shelter and Infrastructure. “It was wonderful to see the CTICC staff painting our premises – the front of our building now has a bright face. We really appreciate the ongoing support we receive, not to mention the generous donation of R12 000 received in June in celebration of the CTICC’s 12th Birthday”, adds Jerry Nico Louw, The Haven Night Shelter Napier Street Manager.
The other legs of the campaign included a classroom refurbishment at the Mitchells Plain School of Skills which aligned to the Education and Literacy theme; a visit to the young mothers who benefit from the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR) programme in Wolseley links to the Service and Volunteerism theme; and for the Food Security theme, CTICC donated compost and mulch to restore the vegetable garden at Moya We Kaya with Abalimi Bezekhaya.
“I was deeply moved by the amount of children who are born with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and decided to give my 67 minutes to FARR for the work they do with young mothers in Wolseley. Being a volunteer for the day was so rewarding. I take my hat off to the organisation”, said Hajira Essop, Office Assistant at the CTICC.
“We are pleased that we were able to promote the fantastic work that our community partners are doing, whilst encouraging our staff and broader community to truly live Madiba’s vision to serve others – not just on Mandela Day but every day”, says Julie-May Ellingson, CTICC Chief Executive Officer.
