Power players gather to attend African Utility Week

The most influential figures in the African power sector gathered at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) to attend African Utility Week, 12 – 14 May 2015, the largest power and water utilities exhibition and conference on the African continent.

The world class African Utility Week conference and exhibition programme attracted 6000 industry professionals and 250 exhibitors, an improvement from the 5000 attendees and 220 exhibitors at the 2014 event.

The City’s Executive Mayor, Patricia De Lille delivered the welcome address at the African Utility Week industry awards and had this to say: “The City of Cape Town is proud to host Africa’s leading event for power and water utilities professionals – now in its 15th year. As a government, we are aware of the ever increasing demand for quality and efficient utility services, and the challenges that go with this.”

The need for a forum such as African Utility Week is now greater than ever, given the current energy situation in South Africa. With the crippling effects that electricity and water shortages or malfunctions have on economic growth, issues such as the reliability of energy sources and the growing demand for further electrification were high on the agenda. Whilst there will always be different theories and approaches to energy problems all over the world, there seemed to be consensus on the fact that Africa has under-utilised its renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power.

“We are cognisant of the energy concerns facing the country, and as such have made significant strides in minimising our energy consumption. For the 2013/2014 financial year the centre has managed to reduce its consumption by 13% despite an increase in the number of events hosted at the centre”, adds CTICC Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May Ellingson.

The CTICC has set itself a target of reducing its overall energy consumption by at least 2% annually. In order to drive the achievement of this target, the centre has focused particularly on improving the quality of its sub-metering and client education.

Client sustainability awareness campaigns on minimising the use of air-conditioning and other utilities, particularly during event set-up and break-down has delivered tangible financial and environmental benefits. Last year the centre was able to save R1.6 million on its utility budget.
