Dinosaurs descend on SA shores after global journey

The long anticipated Days of the Dinosaur exhibition kicked off at the CTICC on the 31 July 2014. This event a first for Cape Town will run for the next few weeks and will conclude on 20 August 2014.

According to General Manager: Commercial & Business Development, Megan Arendse more than 4000m² of the centre’s exhibition halls will be transformed into a prehistoric backdrop dating back 65 million years. The interactive exhibition will feature over 45 roaring, moving, life-sized dinosaurs and 2 dinosaur skeletons.
The advanced engineering behind this event has never been seen by South African exhibition-goers before. The 55 274 kg (55 ton) exhibition has taken an impressive six days to set-up due to the complex mechanics and engineering required to bring the dinosaurs to life.

Travelling from Vigo, Spain, 11 shipping containers with state-of-the-art animatronic dinosaurs underwent a four week, 15 000 kilometre journey across the Atlantic Ocean for the exhibition. “Shipping the dinosaurs is no easy feat”, said Edmund Beukes of Media24, who is involved in the exhibition’s organisation. “The exhibition will be spectacular – it’s educational, family-friendly and extremely interesting to adults and children alike,” he added.

“The event organisers chose to partner with the CTICC on this event due to the central location and flexibility of the venue”, said Arendse. “Over the last few years we have seen an increasing trend of new interactive exhibitions and events coming to the fore”, she added.

The CTICC has played host to unique events such as the World Gym for Life Challenge which was an international gymnastics contest, the Reversing the Legacy exhibition, which recreated the Apartheid regime and the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. The Cape Premier Yearling Sale is the only horse sale in the world that is held in a convention centre. For this event 10 000m² of exhibition space was converted into stables and a sales arena to accommodate the 300 thoroughbred yearlings.

“The CTICC expansion will play an instrumental role in helping us to advance the local exhibition industry by attracting new events to Cape Town, ” concluded Arendse.

Tickets for this event are available from Computicket at a cost of R140.00 per adult and R95.00 per child. Family of Four tickets are also available for R395.00.
