    First in Africa: COMPEX Operations Director achieves international designation

    Compex is proud to announce that their Operations Director, Dean Gunningham, has become the first person in Africa to be awarded the globally recognised Certified in Exhibition Management™ (CEM) designation from the International Association of Exhibition and Events (IAEE) and the CEM Commission. The programme was first established in 1975 to raise

    professional standards in the event industry and continues to be the premier mark of achievement for exhibition industry professionals. Dean now joins a network of more than 2,300 active CEMs from around the world whose designation demonstrates the highest professional standard throughout the exhibition and event management arena.

    In order to achieve his CEM designation, Dean completed the Learning Programme’s comprehensive online study over an eighteen month period. He was required to take nine courses with corresponding examinations, each necessitating a minimum 75% pass rate. “The programme provides you with an overall understanding of the industry, it allows you to interact on a global scale with like-minded professionals and reconfirmed the important role that exhibitions and events play in marketing and communication. The opportunity that exists with face-to-face engagements continues to be very exciting” said Dean. “The curriculum covers essential concepts required by a professional in the exhibition and event management industry, and in many instances the knowledge gained creates a more detailed foundation regarding the services, we as Compex, are providing to clients on a daily basis” Dean continued. He went on to highlight that “The course material is of superior quality, and provides valuable information about subjects such as facilities and site selection, finance, budgeting and contracts, floor plan development, security, risk and crisis management, it is the application of the theory and the opportunity to interact with our international industry peers that becomes crucial in terms of obtaining the full learning and growth potential that comes from doing the CEM learning programme”.

    As the exhibition and events industry in South Africa continues to grow and become more internationalised bringing increased investment and interest to our country, it is essential that our industry professionals are certified and upskilled to provide world-class services and products.
