Sandton Tourism Association welcomes Standard Bank Joy of Jazz to Sandton Convention Centre

Africa’s premiere jazz festival, Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, will take place from September 25 to 27 this year, and for the next five years, at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Jazz giants from across the globe – including four-time Grammy Award winner Dianne Reeves; National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and South African musical legends Sibongile Khumalo and Jonas Gwangwa

    – are part of the line-up for this year’s star-studded line-up. More than 75 performers from across the globe will be taking part. Others to look out for are British R&B legend Billy Ocean; this year’s Grammy recipient for Best Jazz Vocal Gregory Porter; trumpeter Roy Hargrove; Cameroon’s Richard Bona, Dwele from the US and Italian jazz singer and Grammy nominee Roberta Gambarini.

Says Alida Canevari, chairperson of the Sandton Tourism Association: “We are delighted that Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has moved to the Sandton node as the area has a wealth of additional entertainment opportunities for fans attending the festival. Sandton is the richest square mile in Africa and gateway to the continent’s commercial and business hub. People come to Sandton from all over the continent and beyond to work, stay, play or shop.”

It is a sentiment echoed by Dr Mati Nyazema, executive director of Sandton Convention Centre: “As South Africa celebrates 20 years of economic freedom, Sandton is enjoying a growing reputation as Africa’s economic hub and ‘hot spot’, representing one our country’s success stories. The Sandton Convention Centre is pleased to host this prestigious international jazz event at our venue and is delighted to be chosen as the new home of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz.”

The Sandton Tourism Association (STA), which was formed in 2000 to promote Sandton as both a business and leisure tourism destination, has nearly 100 members, many of whom will be offering discounted rates and special packages during the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival.
