    Leisure and Recreation Association of South Africa (LARASA) International Congress to be held in Durban

    From 16 – 19 September 2013 the 2nd LARASA International Congress will be held at the Sun Coast Convention Centre, Durban.

    250 Delegates (50 international and 20 African from 18 different countries and 180 South African) will meet for four days under the theme “Leisure, Social Cohesion and Transformation” to present research papers and run workshops in the fields of Recreation, Leisure, Employee Assistance Programmes and Tourism, Disabilities and Health and Wellbeing.


    The programme is designed for practitioners in the field of leisure and recreation as well as for scholars as it combines the best of both theoretical and practical knowledge. It would therefore be of interest to academics, architects, town planners, primary health care practitioners, municipal managers, employees in the fields of sport, recreation, arts and culture.

    Internationally renowned experts will also address issues such as environmental awareness and environmental justice which includes landscaping, trails, transportation, planning for a leisure city, sustainable cities, preservation of open spaces and natural resource management. Leisure and Sport Management presentations will cover organizational development, policy development and strategic planning, implementation of services, risk management, municipal best practice and good governance. Presentations will also provide relevant standards and guidelines for education and training contributing to the knowledge, competency and a skills base that recreation professionals and other stakeholders need to lead the field effectively.

    The South African Government’s Programme of Action calls for partnerships under the banner “Working Together We Can Do More”. The Programme calls for government action towards building an economic and social infrastructure, to promote social cohesion, caring and sustainable communities and improve the health profile of all South Africans. In this respect, LARASA serves as a single unified association creating opportunities through a multi-faceted approach to leisure and recreation service delivery to build a better life for all South Africans in line with the Millennium Development Goals.
