    SAEC Reopening Guidelines

The SA Events Council (SAEC) is an entity that represents 13 of the major Exhibition and Event Associations within the broader Events Industry of South Africa, a unified voice that speaks on behalf of the Exhibition and Events Industry, in all interactions with the various government departments and bodies for whom the hosting of Exhibitions and Events is an area of focus.

As representatives of the Exhibitions and Events Industry sector in South Africa, SAEC believes that a consistent, Industry-wide approach to Exhibition and Event management is the only practical means for us to re-open Exhibitions and Events safely, with a focus on a phased approach that will be acceptable to both the government and the various local authorities currently governing Exhibitions and Events across South Africa.

event safety council re opening guidelines versionThe Events Safety Council (ESC) is a special interest group within the South African Communications Industries Association (SACIA) and is an integral Association member of the SAEC. In June 2020, in collaboration with global Industry partners and the local Association; the South Africa Association for Conference Industry (SAACI), these new Guidelines were developed for Exhibition and Event Organisers to follow going forward. This is a development for new health and safety protocols and Reopening Guidelines for the MICE and Business Events Industry.

    1. We understand the control measures needed, that they be consistent with the overall national strategies and policies.
    2. We recognise global best practice in minimising the spread of COVID-19, thus, protecting workers, staff, attendees and the public whilst attending events.

The Re-Opening Guidelines for holding Exhibitions and Events are based upon a 5-tiered risk exposure model advocated by the World Health Organisation and upon four cornerstones of prevention and control, namely:

    1. Social-distancing including personal protective equipment.

    2. Protect and detect systems incorporating effective risk assessment protocols and screening processes based on DoH guidelines and DoEL Directions.

    3. Communication and data management protocols including technological contact tracing processes.

    4. Effective personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitisation protocols.
